COVID-19 and your travel insurance

Information for customers who have purchased travel insurance through an advisor or have travel coverage as members of an association (e.g. alumni groups, professional organizations, retiree organizations, financial institutions, retailers).

On December 15, 2021, the Government of Canada issued a Global COVID-19 Travel Advisory to “Avoid Non-Essential Travel” outside Canada.

What does this mean?

  • If a customer purchased the Manulife COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan and are at a destination or have not yet departed on their trip, their coverage will not change. This plan will continue to cover eligible medical expenses if you test positive for COVID-19 while at your destination. It also includes Trip Interruption Insurance for hotel and meal expenses, and for a return flight if a medical professional requires you to quarantine or self-isolate due to a positive COVID-19 test result or contact tracing.
  • If a customer purchased a Manulife Travel Insurance Plan that includes emergency medical benefits and departed on their trip between October 21, 2021 and December 16, 2021 (inclusive), their existing COVID-19 coverage will be in place for the duration of their trip.
  • If a customer purchased a Manulife Travel Insurance Plan that includes emergency medical benefits and is departing on their trip on or after December 17, 2021, they will need to purchase the Manulife COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan to be covered for COVID-19 medical expenses and quarantine benefits. Customers will be allowed to make any necessary changes, even while in destination, until December 21, 2021.
  • If a customer is departing on their trip on or after December 22, 2021, they will need to purchase the Manulife COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan prior to departure in order to be covered for COVID-19 medical expenses and quarantine benefits.
