Is ‘Guaranteed-issue’ health insurance a good choice for you?

July 7, 2025 | 2-minute read

If you’re living with diabetes, high blood pressure, a heart condition or any other potentially serious condition, you may think that you would never qualify for private health and dental insurance. Maybe you’ve even applied and been turned down on account of your “pre existing condition.”

The good news is that you likely can get coverage. It’s just a question of applying for the right kind of coverage.

Application procedures differ

Not all health insurance policies are the same. Insurers offer a range of policies with a range of coverage, price points and application procedures.

With policies that require full underwriting, for example, you may need to undergo a medical exam so that the insurer can more accurately estimate the risk of providing you with insurance.

Other policies may ask you to fill out a medical questionnaire. You may need to answer questions about your personal and family medical history. Again, the questionnaire is a tool that helps the insurer decide whether to accept you as a client.

The third category is what’s known as “guaranteed-issue” insurance. With these policies, there are no medical tests or questions at the time of application, and your acceptance is guaranteed. So even if you have a pre-existing condition like epilepsy or HIV, you can still get comprehensive coverage.

Not just for the hard-to-insure

Guaranteed-issue policies can be an ideal solution for people who otherwise might not qualify for health coverage. However, they can also be an appropriate choice for anyone who wants a fast, hassle-free application process with no questions asked.
