Not all health insurance policies are the same. Insurers offer a range of policies with a range of coverage, price points and application procedures.
With policies that require full underwriting, for example, you may need to undergo a medical exam so that the insurer can more accurately estimate the risk of providing you with insurance.
Other policies may ask you to fill out a medical questionnaire. You may need to answer questions about your personal and family medical history. Again, the questionnaire is a tool that helps the insurer decide whether to accept you as a client.
The third category is what’s known as “guaranteed-issue” insurance. With these policies, there are no medical tests or questions at the time of application, and your acceptance is guaranteed. So even if you have a pre-existing condition like epilepsy or HIV, you can still get comprehensive coverage.
