ONTARIO: Travel insurance reinstated under Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP)

November 01, 2021

For business owners, plan administrators, and sponsors

The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has reversed an earlier decision that removed emergency travel insurance from OHIP back on January 1, 2020.

The Out-of-Country Travellers Program for Emergency Medical Services (arising while outside the country) has been reinstated retroactively. This means there has been no break in coverage under OHIP. (Read more on the OHIP website.)

Claims should be submitted as follows:

Plans with travel assistance managed by Allianz

When Allianz, Manulife’s emergency travel assistance provider, is engaged by the plan member, Allianz will coordinate coverage between OHIP and the group plan.

Plans without travel assistance managed by Allianz

The plan member will need to submit the claim to OHIP before submitting the claim to Manulife.

Allianz and the group benefits industry are working with OHIP to ensure new claims processes are established. If you have any questions, please speak to your Manulife representative.
