You can start to make physical activity part of your daily life
The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada suggests that adults get 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Being active can have a positive effect on cholesterol levels, blood pressure and the heart.
But getting started may be the biggest hurdle to overcome. Here are some tips on working physical activity into your daily routine – no fitness centre membership required.
- Start with a manageable activity. Take a walk in your neighborhood or dance to your favourite songs.
- Set aside 10 minutes of your lunch hour to take a walk. And during bad weather, take advantage of stairs if you have them at your place of work or close by.
- Get an exercise buddy. Making activities a team endeavor can be a motivator for both.
- Have fun.
And remember, it’s important that you get the okay from your doctor before beginning any exercise program.
Here are some activities you may not think as traditional exercise, but done consistently, can make a difference in your health:
- Garden
- Walk
- Go bowling
- Dance
- Walk the mall
- Go sledding or tubing with the kids
- Wash your car by hand
- Vacuum the house
- Instead of trying to get the parking spot closest to the store, park the car further away
